BQCIS

Portable Radiography for Thick and Dense Materials

Gamma Ray Radiography employs high-energy gamma rays emitted from sealed radioactive isotopes such as Iridium-192 or Cobalt-60. These isotopes can penetrate extremely dense or thick materials, allowing detection of internal flaws in heavy castings, forgings, pressure vessels, and pipelines.

The system is entirely self-contained and requires no electricity — a major advantage for remote or field environments. The gamma source is stored in a shielded exposure camera and projected via guide tubes to make controlled exposures onto film or digital plates. Resulting radiographs reveal variations in internal density that indicate discontinuities such as cracks, inclusions, or voids.

BQCIS technicians are fully licensed for the safe handling of radiographic sources and operate in compliance with international radiation-protection regulations, ensuring accurate and safe inspection operations worldwide.

Key Gamma Ray RT Activities

Source Handling & Exposure

Safely positioning the gamma source and detector, calculating exposure times, and establishing controlled radiation boundaries in accordance with safety codes.

Image Processing & Interpretation

Developing or digitally scanning the radiograph, followed by interpretation per ASME and ISO acceptance criteria to classify internal indications.

Key Benefits of Gamma Ray Radiography

Versatile Applications

Widely used for weld inspection in pipelines, heavy pressure vessels, castings, and large fabricated structures.

Benefit Icon

Reveals Internal Flaws

Detects volumetric defects including porosity, inclusions, lack of penetration, and root concavity before service use.

Success Story

Gamma Ray RT Ensures Pipeline Weld Integrity in Remote Location

The Challenge:

A cross-country oil pipeline project required 100% RT of all girth welds across hundreds of kilometers of remote terrain with limited access to power.

Our Solution:

BQCIS radiographers utilized portable Ir-192 cameras with computed radiography plates, enabling efficient, high-quality imaging directly in the field.

The Result:

Several welds with internal inclusions were identified and repaired pre-commissioning, preventing potential leaks and ensuring long-term pipeline integrity.
