Portable Penetrant Testing for Field Applications

The Solvent Removable Method is a versatile Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) process that removes excess penetrant using a solvent rather than water or emulsifiers. This makes it ideal for on-site applications, remote areas, and inspections where water cannot be used.

Technicians apply the penetrant (visible or fluorescent), allow sufficient dwell time for flaw penetration, and then gently wipe away excess penetrant using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with solvent. A developer is then applied to draw trapped penetrant out of surface discontinuities, revealing red or fluorescent indications depending on the penetrant type.

BQCIS employs ASTM E165-compliant solvent removable kits to perform fast, reliable, and portable inspections for welds, castings, pipelines, and structural components during maintenance or shutdowns.

Key Solvent Removable PT Activities

Penetrant Application & Dwell

Applying visible or fluorescent penetrant uniformly to the inspection area and allowing optimal dwell time for flaw penetration.

Solvent Wiping & Development

Removing surface penetrant using solvent-moistened cloths and applying a fine developer coat to draw out indications of flaws.

Key Benefits of the Solvent Removable Method

Benefit Icon

Highly Portable

Self-contained kits using aerosol cans make the process ideal for field inspections and hard-to-reach sites.

Benefit Icon

No Water or Emulsifier Needed

Perfect for components sensitive to water exposure or facilities without rinsing infrastructure.

Benefit Icon

Quick Spot Checks

Ideal for localized inspections on welds, pressure vessels, or pipelines without full system processing.

Benefit Icon

Compatible with All Penetrants

Works efficiently with both visible red dye and fluorescent penetrant systems for various inspection levels.

Success Story

Solvent Removable PT Detects Weld Crack During Field Inspection

The Challenge:

During a maintenance shutdown, welds on outdoor structural supports needed inspection in a location without water supply for rinsing.

Our Solution:

BQCIS NDT inspectors used aerosol-based solvent removable PT kits (Method C) to perform on-site checks rapidly and effectively.

The Result:

A clear linear indication was revealed on one weld joint, confirmed as a fatigue crack. The fast, waterless process enabled immediate detection and timely repair action during shutdown.
